The Prodigy - The Fat of the Land - 90's

The Fat of the Land is The Prodigys 3rd studio album and was released in the UK by XL Recordings on the 30th of June 1997 and in US by Maverick Records on the 1st of July 1997. In the US chart it debuted at number one, and sold over 2 million copies. It has achieved quite a lot in the time of its release including, going double platinum, nominated for a Grammy Award and Mercury Music Prize and was entered into the Guinness World Records, in 1999, as the UK fastest selling album. Also, the album is in the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

The band is made up of Keith Flint (vocals), Liam Howlett (Keyboards) and Maxim Reality (vocals). Also Liam Howlett is their producer, mixing and does the art work. They also have additional members who help with their live show, Leo Crabtree and Rob Holliday.

The genre is classed as a wide variety of aspects of music including: electronic rock, big beat, dance rock and synth punk. This album, i think, represents the best of the mix of these genres. The songs on this album are based around samples, synths and basslines. Using samples has evolved massively throughout the decades, and is shown well through this album. They have used, in this album, samples from Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan, Kool and the Gang and in the most commonly known song, Smack My Bitch Up, a sample from Ultamagnetic Mc's, the American hip hop group.

I chose this album because it is a brilliant show of The Prodigy's musical potential, with the use of samples, the catchy basslines and the overall sound of the punky synth sound. Also, i have seen The Prodigy live numerous times and their performances are just as good as the quality of their albums.
